Understand your body shape
Understanding the shape of your body is important, as it will help you when making decisions to purchase clothes. Here are some of the most common body shapes and our advice on which cocktail dresses to choose for your body shape.
The apple
Apple shaped bodies tend to carry weight around the centre of the body and do not particularly have much of a defined waist. Apples best features will either be a fantastic pair of breasts or lovely set of legs. Learn to show off your best assets and do not add any volume around the waist area.
Pick a dress that draws attention to the breast area, pick something that flows effortlessly over the stomach area. Say no to bows, belts and any other detailing around the waist area.
The pear
If you carry more weight around the hips and thighs, compared to up top then you fall into the pear category. Pears often have reasonably flat tummy’s and you should try to add shape above the waist area.
You want a dress which isn’t too tight fitting around the waist area, as this will only draw attention to your hips. An A line dress will work well for you, as would a dress with a low neck line. Add a neck lace to encourage the eye to your breast and neck areas.
The Strawberry
Strawberries are bigger up top due to large broad shoulders or large breasts. Waists, hips and bottoms are smaller, and strawberries body shape can look boyish.
Strawberries dressing problems are easily overcome with a few key good choices. Look for something that is fitted, but has a flared skirt which will add lots of volume. Single strap dresses will also work really well for you. Avoid an off the shoulder dress as this will only make them look broader than they already are.
The Hour Glass
Hour glass women have fuller breasts and bottoms and go in at the waist. Most women want this shape but it’s a shape that is very easy to drown out but wearing the incorrect clothing.
Wrap around dresses look really good as they usually tie around the waist area which ensures definition.
The Rectangle
Rectangle women are pretty straight down the sides with no real curves. You don’t really have to hide any parts of your body if you are this shape, its more about creating curves by wearing the right choice of clothes.
Halter necks are the way forward for you, just don’t choose anything that is too straight down the sides.
